Choosing the right color of the monofilament fishing line one uses for various fishing tactics and or conditions can greatly affect the amount of fish the anglers is liable to hook. When the fishingis being done in gin clear water, it’s often better to choose low-visibility fishing lines. This is simply because many types of fish are more likely to become line shy under such clear water conditions. It can become very frustrating situation when fish are spotted in plain sight in very clear water, but the fish are repeatedly shying away from your offering because they see something is “wrong”because of a highly visible monofilament fishing line.

Monofilament fishing line tinted or colored in blue, clear, and green are all line colors that blend in well when fishing in clear water conditions. In addition, when fishing in clear water I’d highly recommend using fluorocarbon leaders because fluorocarbon fishing line is manufactured to be virtually invisible to the fish when the fishing line is under the water.

The color of themonofilament fishing line is much less crucial when the water you are fishing is turbid, stained, or riled up by waves caused from wind conditions. In fact, in such conditions high visibility fishing lines are often better choices because with these more visible lines it is easier to see where the line is when casting or, hopefully, when a big fish is being fought after a hook up.

High visibility mono lines are also good choices for low light conditions such as night fishing. I do a lot of night fishing for big stripers and many times higher visibility lines have helped me out to avoid tangles with other anglers on the boat. In addition, in low light conditions high visibility mono linestinted yellow, white, or orange aremuch easier to observe when watching the rod tip and line forany light pick-upsor bites. It’s the little things like having the right colored fishing line in the water at the right times that can help a novice angler move up to the next level in the fishing game.

Whenever I head out on the water I always take several different types of outfits spooled up with various types and colors of main lines with me. Some have low visibility lines and some have high visibility lines. Once I’m on the spot I want to fish, I stop for a few seconds and observe the water conditions. This helps me choose the right color fishing line for the task at hand, and in my business that’s means helping my customers catch as many big fish as they can.
